Xpeng unveils three MONA M03 electric cars

Xpeng unveils MONA M03, a series of three electric cars that have a heat-insulating panoramic skylight and an adjustable, movable cabin space. The Chinese vehicle manufacturer wants the driver and passengers to enjoy the outside from the inside. The skylight above their heads, a standard for the series, has a viewing area of 1.22 square meters and protects them from the heat and sun without obscuring the glass panel.

Even the interior has what the car manufacturer calls a ‘magic space.’ The design allows for two modes. The first makes the front passenger seat more comfortable, while the latter adjusts the space so the passengers behind have more room. The driver can activate these modes with one touch, allowing the car to automatically distribute the cabin space ratio to 7:3. Depending on their needs, the users can move the space to accommodate people or objects.

Large trunk to fit in skateboards, tent and camping gear

Xpeng’s MONA M03 electric cars also have a large trunk, so users can pack and stash more objects for the road. The standard size of the trunk is 621 liters, but if they need more, they can expand it up to 1,603 liters, big enough to fit skateboards, tents, and camping gear. On top of that, the trunk opening is wide to make it easy to put things in and take them out. The car company expressed its plans to release more customizable options in the future.

With this game plan, users can tailor the spaces and interiors to their needs even more. The electric car is smart, equipped with over 20 advanced sensors that give it awareness of its surroundings. In this way, the MONA M03 can keep itself centered in its driving lane, automatically adjust its speed to maintain a safe distance from surrounding vehicles, and provide the driver with a 360-degree view when parking or maneuvering in tight spaces.

3D map system for detailed road visuals

The Xpeng vehicle even has an Intelligent Parking system, meaning it can work its way through all kinds of parking situations. The car manufacturer says the smart electric car can successfully park in 95 percent of scenarios. Xpeng’s MONA M03 electric cars use an in-house 3D map system to make it much more realistic for the driver to see what’s on the road. This map, the manufacturer believes, is accurate down to the specific lane the car is in.

In a way, it can help the vehicle handle complicated situations like intersections, highway exits, and ramps. Inside the MONA M03, a 15.6-inch floating touchscreen triples as the entertainment and driving information display. It comes with features such as a bottom menu guide, card-style interaction similar to smartphones, and the ability to use multiple fingers to control different functions on the screen.

There’s a four-zone voice interaction system in Xpeng’s MONA M03 series, meaning the driver can control different parts of the car using voice commands. Because the electric car is keyless, they can also use their smartphones to pop the doors with hidden handles open. Even the air-conditioning, which is also hidden, offers four modes: smart defog, guard, ventilation, and wind sweeping. These can keep the car’s interior comfortable in different situations.

Eighteen custom speakers arranged in a 7.1.4 channel layout are installed inside the vehicle, a setup that makes the sound feel like it’s coming from all around. The driver and passengers can also play with the 256-color ambient lighting, a setting that can create different moods inside the car and sync with the rhythm of the music. Essentially, the interior lights can switch colors depending on the beat and vibe of the music playing.

The frame of Xpeng’s MONA M03 sits low to make it stable, especially when the driver takes turns or accelerates quickly. The suspension system, which can absorb shocks from bumps in the road, has undergone extensive testing to ensure a smoother ride on rough roads and over speed bumps. Xpeng says its electric cars have a small turning radius (5.3 meters), so they can turn around in tight spaces easily. In this case, the steering ratio is also optimized so that drivers don’t have to turn the steering wheel much to make a full turn.

The electric car has a driving range of 620 kilometers on a full charge, using only 11.5 kWh of power per 100 kilometers. With fast charging, the car can add 200 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes. For those who want an even smarter driving experience, there is a version called the Xpeng MONA M03 Max. This model includes an even more advanced driving assistance system called XNGP.

As of the publishing of this story, the Xpeng MONA M03 515 long-range version is priced at 119,800 yuan (around 16,809 USD), the Xiaopeng MONA M03 620 ultra-long-range version at 129,800 yuan (around 18,212 USD), and the Xiaopeng MONA M03 580 ultra-long-range Max version at 155,800 yuan (around 21,860 USD).
