E ink displays on world’s first color-changing electric guitars

The world’s first color-changing electric guitars have E Ink displays on them so they can switch between seven different shades and styles. A collaboration between E Ink and Cream Guitars, the series of musical instruments features seven colors that blink and shift in patterns. The shades range from yellow, brown, blue, and orange to white, black, and gray. These paper-like displays clad the surface of the electric guitars.

They seem hidden from plain sight, given their sharp visibility. The transition may take split seconds, but they switch quite seamlessly from one color to another. Cream Guitars integrates the ePaper technology of the E Ink Prism 3 ePaper onto the electric guitars. They appear on the surface of the instruments’ bodies, switching between animations as the player strums the strings. The duo works on the series because they want to offer players personalization and customization when it comes to their electric guitars. Because of this, the users can either animate the E Ink displays on their electric guitars, or choose a static style.

Ultra-low power and low-carbon screens on instruments

Aside from the color-changing capabilities of the electric guitars, E Ink and Cream Guitars say that the technology is ultra-low power. This means its energy is efficient enough not to consume too much electricity. These displays are also low-carbon, which can help reduce their environmental footprint. The woods used in production for the electric guitars are also renewable, as the technology and instrument companies share.

E Ink uses its Prism 3 ePaper technology for the collaboration. Cream Guitars goes for its series Voltage DaVinci. The combination results in the electric guitars with E Ink displays. The teams demonstrate the musical instruments during the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) 2025 at the Anaheim Convention Center in California. The duo says they’re proud to create instruments that also make a visual statement as powerful as their music.
