wiesmann hits the road with ‘project thunderball,’ an electric convertible sports car

first sports car that’s electric & convertible

Wiesmann jumps on the electrified-cars bandwagon with Project Thunderball. The two-seater electric convertible sports car is the first in the market, as Wiesmann claims, and features that marque that has long dictated the company’s ethos since 1988.

‘This is the culmination of a dream, the result of years of design excellence and engineering brilliance. I truly believe we’ve made not just the world’s most exciting electric sports car, but a car so unique that it will appreciate in value over its lifetime,’ comments Roheen Berry, the CEO of Wiesmann, in a news release.

It runs from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds

Powered by twin electric rear-mid mounted motors, the electric convertible sports car delivers up to 500kW (680hp) to the rear wheels and 1100 Nm of torque, which brings an acceleration speed from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. Weismann’s Project Thunderball is also lightweight, thanks to its carbon-fiber frame that makes it achieve a total weight of 1,700 kilos.

The company states that the target range of Project Thunderball is 500km, and this can occur through its high-voltage battery capacity. The car can be charged with its 22kW onboard unit at the owner’s home, or extremely fast with up to 300kW DC fast charging at a rapid charge public charger.

Regenerative braking to assist driver

Project Thunderball offers five settings where the driver can change the twin electric motors’ regenerative braking feel to give an engine braking effect into corners, recharging the battery and maximizing the use of energy with minimal waste. In another driver-oriented feature of the electric convertible sports car, the charge display shows how fast the car is charging instead of the percentage of the total charge to help the driver calculate the optimal charge level for each ride.

Interior-wise, leathers work alongside finished carbon fiber, hand-shaped wood veneers, and premium metal finishes, adding a sense of luxury to the electrified convertible. As of publishing the story, riders can own a Project Thunderball for 3,000,000 EUR.
