through the use of a search engine and the power of the internet, yahoo japan has developed ‘hands on search’, a voice activated 3D printer for visually impaired children that responds to speech. the visual and auditory installation is created for special needs education schools and for the visually impaired, and collects three dimensional search data retrieved from a child’s voice – whether it be requests for a giraffe or a tyrannosaurus rex – physically producing solid object on demand. in the future, this type of concept will help aid children with visual disabilities, giving them sensory stimulation through tactile experiences. to see how ‘hands on speech’ works, see the videos below.
