the costa concordia – the wrecked italian cruise liner which crashed in 2012 onto the island of giglio, 18 kilometers off italy’s western coast – has entered the port of genova for metal scrapping after a two-year salvage operation. parbuckling operations of the luxury ship began in september of 2013, where during the process, engineers pulled the half sunken cruise liner upright. the initiative was designed to prepare the vessel to be transported via tug boat towards a specially constructed docking point near genova for dismantling . despite a night of heavy storms, the crippled costa concordia managed to complete its four-day journey in a convoy of vessels from giglio – at an average speed of 2 knots – without any major incidents or occurrences. to read more on how the ship was lifted, see here.
