the italian volt lacama electric custom motorcycle

italian volt introduces its first electric motorcycle, the ‘lacama’ as a premium, fully-customizable bike which covers a spectrum of styles for personal tastes: there are bespoke specifications between a café racer, roadster, scrambler, with a personal theme. the milan-based company was founded by three partners, of which two – nicola colombo and valerio fumagalli – hold a guinness record for the greatest distance travelled on an electric bike. in 2013 they travelled 12,379 km from shanghai to milan in 44 days, purely on green energy. their dream to build a bike to complement this achievement resulted in italian volt, with contribution from adriano stellino, a designer who has worked with lamborghini and bertone.

the italian volt’s ‘lacama’s’ bodywork, frame and swing arm are 3D printed, which creates the possibility for people to design their very own hand-crafted parts. before the motorcycle is built, customers will be able to pre-order their own options choosing from a variety of shapes and colors for the 12 components that complete the bodywork. the electric bike can be as anything that fits within the geometry of the frame. the motorcycle features high-end equipment, with brembo brakes and öhlins suspension, plus the 17-inch wheels can be crafted from either aluminum alloy or carbon fiber.

the ‘lacama’s’ refinements include a TFT touchscreen with GPS, plus smartphone connectivity  for both android and iOS. this display allows the rider to monitor battery charging status, identify the motorcycle’s location, and switch between performance profiles by altering the bike’s torque and engine braking. one particularly notable feature is ‘fast charging’: on a standard mains outlet, the batteries take appoximately three hours to fully charge, but  a ‘fast charging’ outlet would refuel the bike back up to 80 percent in just 40 minutes.

the customizable electric motorcycle is built around an in-house-designed aluminum frame, housing li-ion battery cells with a total capacity of 15 kWh. these power an electric motor that transfers 94 horsepower (70 kW) with 208 Nm (153.45 lb-ft) of torque to the rear wheel via a belt drive.  at 250 kg (551 lb) the ‘lacama’ isn’t featherweight, while it takes 4.6 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (60 mph), hitting its top speed limit at  180 km/h (112 mph).
