singapore deploys dog robots to remind people of safe distancing measures

since the COVID-19 pandemic started, boston dynamics has been testing different ways to see how their spot robot can help fight it. first we reported how the dog bot is protecting frontline healthcare workers by helping doctors treat infected patients by minimizing their exposure. today, the strait times published a video of how singapore is deploying them at the bishan-ang mo kio park to remind visitors of safe social distancing measures.

for this initiative, spot — the robot dog by boston dynamics — will broadcast a recorded message where it will remind visitors about the safety measures. the two-week trial started today having the dogobot patrol 3 kilometers of the park during off-peak hours, accompanied by a park officer. cameras have been fitted to help the robot estimate the number of visitors in the park, while safety sensors allow it to detect objects and people within one meter to avoid collision.

spot was chosen mostly because its ability to cover different types of terrains. this is due to its four legs which help it to move more effectively compared to wheeled robots. this particular version has also other functions, including remote control, 3D mapping and semi-autonomous operations. the fact that it can be controlled remotely minimizes physical contact among staff, safe distancing ambassadors and park visitors, helping to lower the risk of exposure to the virus.
