the potential of apparel lies in materials that alter circumstances, or that are designed to have unexpected properties, combined with integral electronics. rehabstudio opened their minds and envisioned what apparel of the future might look like, what it might do, how it might live and react to our world with the ‘shift sneaker’ concept. 

as a creative technology agency based in shoreditch, east london, it seemed only normal to hack popular shoes, exploring the possibilities behind how technology will one day enlighten its design. in culture today, sneakers are a declaration – an extension of choices people make when they dress. rehabstudio believes that in the future, when consumers buy a single pair of sneakers, they will actually be buying one million pairs. 

the technology utilizes phase change fibers and shape memory meta materials that enable interchangeability between layouts, locking chosen patterns to the sneakers. the fabric tissue allows properties to bend light spectrums but also adapt to variables such as surface or temperature. conductive filament woven into the shoe membrane, passes electrical signals that behave to the human touch whilst tiny LEDs act as ductile screen which displays the ‘shift’ designs.

the paired open sourced application will feature a ‘pack’ store where users can download design layouts based on any specific subject. the ‘shift sneaker’ concept by rehabstudio is a periscope into the possibilities of wearable technology that can further evolve everyday customizable products.
