pagani unveils track-focused imola hypercar ahead of geneva debut

pagani has unveiled its hypercar, the imola, named after the famous italian racetrack. the track-focused $5.4 million USD edition is a hardcore variant of the huayra that makes its public premiere at the 2020 geneva motor show.

the pagani imola comes powered by a 6.0-liter mercedes-amg v12 engine, the same motor in pagani’s other ‘hypercar,’ the huayra. it’s turbocharged to 827 hp and 1,100 nm (811 lb-ft) of torque.

the central monocoque frame, which is made from ‘carbo-titanium hp62 g2 and carbo-triax hp62’, is also the same as the one on the huayra roadster BC. created to reduce weight while increasing torsional and bending stiffness, it brings the overall weight to 1,246-kg (2,747-lb).

weight-saving also went into the car’s paint job, which uses acquarello light, a new bespoke painting system that cuts five kg while maintaining colour richness, depth and shine. this new painting tech will be available on future pagani models.

a seven-speed automated manual gearbox, pirelli trofeo R tires, and an active aerodynamics system that automatically adjusts the car’s four mobile winglets to current driving conditions, all contribute to the car’s aoerdynamic features. meanwhile, the braking system has been optimized for better cooling featuring brembo carbon-ceramic discs, 398 mm six-pot front and 380 mm four-pot rear.

‘the aerodynamic technology behind the pagani imola is evident in three of its key features. the general outline, the internal aerodynamics and the external aerodynamic details, such as the fins, winglets and deflectors,’ explained horacio pagani, founder and chief designer of pagani automobili. ‘we can’t say that it’s an elegant car. we wanted an efficient vehicle, and just as you’d expect if you were looking at an f1 single-seater, this led us to design a car with additional aerodynamic features.’

‘so, although on the one hand these details may detract from the lines and overall aesthetics of the vehicle, on the other, they also allow to improve lap time, ease of driving and especially safety. speaking of safety, we could have reduced the ground clearance so as to increase the downforce effect by taking advantage of the vehicle’s flat bottom.’

‘but don’t forget, the public roads are very uneven and can lead to the loss of several hundred kilograms of downforce in just a few instants. well aware of these dangers, we worked very carefully on the upper part and details of the car.’

only five imolas are earmarked for production. the pagani huayra imola makes a live appearance at the geneva international motor show in switzerland, on march 3, 2020.
