on wednesday, the wall street journal reported that motorola intended to relaunch the RAZR as a $1,500 foldable screen smartphone. after the news many started speculating on how it would differ from the original. one such speculator was mobile tech blog 91 mobile who hit the investigation hard, going back over motorola’s recent patent applications, discovering a design filed back in december 2018.

the patent contains images of a potential design for a new phone with a foldable display. there’s no mention of the name ‘RAZR’ anywhere on motorola mobility’s registration, but the design bears an uncanny resemblance to the iconic handset. the major difference is that on the inside of the phone the old combination of screen and buttons have been replaced with a single long, folding screen, which matches what the WSJ’s said about the appearance of the upcoming remake.

the patent appears to include a small display on the top half, just like the original. on the inside, the iconic number pad has been replaced with a single, reportedly foldable display which is said to fold over at the center. it won’t crease at the hinge, according to the WSJ, so the display might simply bend rather than actually fold like a piece of paper.
