Morrama’s Mindful AI tools assist children’s mental health

Morrama gears up to help children and support their mental health by proposing a series of concept Mindful AI tools for them. The lineup includes a fidget spinner, a ‘MidJourney’ printer, an AI companion, and a projector with a built-in speaker. The design team, which also developed mixed-reality glasses that flash games in front of the user’s eyes, has turned to machine-learning data analysis to power their smart tools.

There are four concept products, whose first letter all begins with letter C: Calm, Comfort, Create, and Connect. Connect is an AI sunflower. Since children need to be able to talk to someone they trust, the robotic companion can help jumpstart it. The tool facilitates interaction between the parent or caregiver and child. The sunflower asks them questions to kick off the conversation, which are flashed on the small display screen in the middle. If they wish, the children can hold onto the touch-sensitive petals for some support as well.

‘Midjourney’ printer and a fidget spinner for anxiety

The sort of ‘MidJourney’ printer finds its body in the design studio’s Create. It’s a green-colored, tube-like device that generates line drawings for the children to color, like an on-the-spot coloring page. Create works through spoken prompts. It listens to what the children want to color and prints them out, similar to how Midjourney generates AI images. If, while coloring, the children get anxious, they can grab Calm, the fidget spinner.

It is a medium that can help children ease their anxiety while monitoring their well-being. It uses motion and heart rate sensors, as well as a sweat monitor. Children can squeeze and compress this toy-like cube, and by doing so, the embedded sensors get a better view of their health and mental data. It sends the data to their parents or caregivers, so actions are taken as soon as possible. This, along with the other concept tools, is inspired by a 2023 NHS survey on the mental health of children and young people in England.

When playtime is over, the children can switch on the design studio’s Comfort, a small projector with a built-in speaker. The device responds to the children’s request with images and sounds, as if it were an automated artist painting what they want to see. It hears their pictured landscape and projects it on the wall or surface, accompanied by an ideal sound. With these in mind, the Morrama Mindful AI tools, albeit still a concept, may offer ideas on how parents or caregivers can take care of their children’s mental health.

One of the factors that made Morrama develop their concept AI tools stems from NHS data on children. It states that 1 in 5 young people have a mental health disorder, and in hopes of helping reduce the number, the design studio eyes to develop their AI tools for children. For the concept devices, they’ve partnered with a child psychiatrist to understand the common issues children may face in terms of their mental health and overall wellbeing. The results give birth to four colorful smart objects that can improve children’s mental health and wellbeing.

These concept Mindful AI tools for children hope to help them manage their emotions, build connections with other people, tinker with their creativity, and, at times, carve a daydreaming pathway for them. The Morrama AI devices target children aged six and above. They capitalize on the capabilities of AI to offer an alternative to talking therapies.

These AI objects encourage the children to interact with them, thus helping improve their mental health. It adds that the smart devices are colorful and playful-looking too, increasing the chances of the children picking them up to toy with and use. As of publishing the story, there are no announcements yet on the production timeline of the devices.
