mercedes-benz CLS coupé redefines elegant dynamics at 2017 LA auto show

unveiled at the 2017 LA auto show, the mercedes-benz ‘CLS coupé’ once again redefines the possibilities for an elegantly dynamic yet highly comfortable car. it is the third generation model of a completely new vehicle segment, which they established back in 2003 to combine distinguishable aspects of coupés and saloons. the latest design expresses a highly emotive character where long-distance comfort is coupled with thrilling performance and intelligent technology.

‘the new CLS is a design icon as the archetype of the four-door coupé. in line with our hot & cool design philosophy, we have reduced its DNA to an extremely puristic level while emotionally charging it with an almost erotic beauty,‘ says gorden wagener, chief design officer daimler AG. following this ‘sensual purity’ design idiom, the mercedes-benz ‘CLS coupe’ communicates clear contours with a reduction of sharp lines and edges. in spite of this, the car still reflects the traits of the first and much admired ‘CLS’. its high, arching waistline and low greenhouse with flat, frameless side windows ensure that it exudes a self-assured sportiness in an exemplar style.

resembling a similar shape to the mercedes-AMG ‘GT‘ grille, the feature widens towards the base and establishes a forward-slanting front section. the very flat and wide headlamps, which enhance ultra range high beam LED technology, are tuned with this as they extend the grille’s form until dynamically slanting inwards at their flanks. towards the rear, its muscular shoulder line blends smoothly down into the flat back end to accentuate its low positioning and the width of the vehicle. the two-section tail lights complete its powerful composition with a crystalline appearance that creates a three-dimensional effect.

the exterior’s clear contours are echoed by the sensual and flowing lines within the interior. dominated by the cantilevered center console – a defining feature of the interiors of mercedes-benz – the either open-pored or high-gloss piece appears to float thanks to specifically crafted indentations and tailored lighting. the cockpit’s width is accentuated by these details in order to create an impression of generous spaciousness and a sporty motif. following this further, the hand-finished seats reflect a luxury performance definition.

the cockpit is fully digital in order to allow the driver to have complete control over the highly customizable machine and its performance. first of all, the ambience lighting, most notably defining the shape of the center console, is adjustable in 64 different colors. as well, the vehicle’s technology offers the latest infotainment options with smartphone connectivity, wireless charging and even in-car office, where work functions can be completed and important data can be accessed. although optional, the energizing comfort control delivers specific wellness settings for the user. by controlling the functions of the lighting, music, climate control and the seats, surface and steering wheel heating, the interior environment can be tailored to any mood or need desired.

additionally, the driver can also select the vehicle characteristics via the 12.3-inch media display, choosing between comfort, sport and sport+ modes of its air body control four-link front and five-link rear suspensions. the mercedes-benz ‘CLS coupe’ is equipped with the latest and most advanced driving assistance systems, as similarly seen in the ‘S-class’. the coupé boasts active brake assist, lane keeping assist, attention assist, speed limit assist, and the occupant protection system PRE-SAFE, as well as an optional active driving assistance package.

following its release at the 2017 LA auto show, the model will be released in march 2018 with in-line six-cylinder and in-line four cylinder units as diesel and petrol versions. from the CLS 350 d 4MATIC that delivers 286 hp with 600 Nm of torque, to the CLS 400 d 4MATIC that offers 340 hp with 700 Nm, or the CLS d 450 4MATIC that propels 367 hp with 500 Nm, each vehicle facilitates the power to accentuate its desired performance. together with its advanced and adjustable technology, comfortable suspension and interior, and its dynamic styling, the ‘CLS coupé’ further distinguishes the harmonious balance between sportiness and luxury.
