land rover has revealed the 2015 discovery sport, the first member of the newly redesigned discovery family. unique in its segment, the discovery sport’s dynamic design combines a 5+2 seating configuration in a more compact footprint than traditional five-seat SUVs. the latest premium sports utility vehicle from the UK-based manufacturer also presents a set of brand of land rover innovations, including the next generation multi-link rear axle, advanced pedestrian airbag technology, an all-new touchscreen infotainment system and state-of-the-art high-strength steel and lightweight aluminum body-shell for optimal performance, safety and efficiency.

the discovery sport has been designed to be as environmentally sustainable as possible: CO2 emissions are comparable to smaller and less versatile family hatchbacks, and is available either as a 2.2-liter turbo diesel or with a 4-cylinder gasoline-powered 240 horsepower 2.0 liter engine. unlike its predecessor, the SUV introduces a progressive new design approach specifically tailored to create clear differentiation between the other families within the land rover brand.

alongside terrain response and wade sensing, the discovery sport also features additional off-road technologies such as hill descent control (HDC) which maintains a set speed while negotiating steep inclines off-road, gradient release control (GRC) to progressively release the brakes when moving away on an incline for maximum control and engine drag torque control (EDC) which helps to prevent lock-up under heavy engine braking in slippery conditions. designboom experienced up close how the land rover ‘discovery sport’ new design and additional technologies enable a comfortable and spacious ride, even in extreme off-road situations.
