kalmar 9x9: 'world's first retro hypercar' debuts at monterey car week 2024

‘automotive haute couture’ on display in monterey

Kalmar Automotive is making waves at Monterey Car Week 2024 with the global debut of its all-new Kalmar 9X9. Dubbed the ‘world’s first retro hypercar,’ the 9X9 is set to redefine expectations in the automotive world as the company’s unique approach, which it calls ‘Automotive haute couture,’ ensures each vehicle is a one-of-a-kind creation, tailored to the preferences of its owner.

Kalmar Automotive was founded by passionate car enthusiasts with a rich racing heritage. Now, it is showcasing both the 9X9 — along with its 7-97 — on August 16th, at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. The event is hosted by Jan Kalmar, the company’s founder, and Bruce Canepa, the exclusive U.S. dealer from the Canepa Group, Inc. The vehicles, known for their intricate craftsmanship and precision, demand to be seen up close to fully appreciate their level of detail. Each car is designed to be driven and enjoyed for years to come, merging the best of analog design with cutting-edge digital technology.

Advanced Engineering Meets Classic Design

The Kalmar 9X9 is packed with state-of-the-art technology typically found in larger OEM manufacturers. It includes a 3.8L turbo engine that produces 930 horsepower, paired with a double clutch transmission and an advanced all-wheel-drive system. The vehicle’s adaptive suspension and rear-wheel steering further enhance its performance. The 9X9 also features active engine mounts, optimized intake and cooling systems, ceramic bearings, and a lightweight inconel exhaust system, all contributing to its high performance and distinctive engine sound. The car’s development spanned over three years, resulting in a vehicle with significant downforce and a projected Nürburgring lap time of 7 minutes.

The company‘s founder Jan Kalmar describes the 9X9 as a tribute to one of the greatest sports cars of the millennium, enhanced with the latest technology to create a brand-new vehicle class. The company quietly teased the 9X9 over the past two years, and now it’s finally here. The 9X9 reflects Kalmar Automotive’s dedication to engineering excellence and innovation. It’s not just a car — it’s a manifestation of ‘automotive dreams,’ designed for those who understand and appreciate its value.

Innovative Suspension and Braking Systems

The Kalmar 9X9 features a fully bespoke double-wishbone pushrod front-axle suspension, developed by Danisi Engineering in Italy. The suspension system is designed to manage the vehicle’s contact with the road precisely, utilizing shock absorbers from Tractive and superlight magnesium rims paired with Michelin tires. The car’s braking system, developed in partnership with CarboBrake, includes 3D-printed lightweight titanium brake calipers and ceramic brake discs, offering reliable on-road performance with minimal unsprung mass.

Kalmar Automotive has gone to great lengths to ensure the 9X9’s aerodynamic efficiency. The car’s bodywork underwent extensive CFD testing by Aerotak, optimizing both drag and downforce. The result is a full carbon fiber body that weighs less than 100 kg and consists of over 100 parts. This attention to detail ensures that the 9X9 is not just fast, but also incredibly stable at high speeds.

Inside, the Kalmar 9X9 emphasizes a minimalist design with a focus on the pure joy of driving. The cabin features a blend of traditional analog and modern digital elements, with LCD screens providing essential information. There’s no navigation system or radio, as Bluetooth connectivity allows for discreet connection to any modern device. The interior is designed for two, with each lightweight seat personalized for the driver and passenger. Safety and performance are enhanced by a hidden roll cage, which also adds to the vehicle’s structural rigidity.

Kalmar Automotive offers the 9X9 in three versions: 9X9, 9X9 Sport, and 9X9 Leichtbau, each delivering a unique driving experience. The 9X9 model is a road-focused powerhouse with a double clutch transmission and all-wheel drive, ideal for long-distance touring. The 9X9 Sport offers more driver involvement with a 3.0L turbocharged engine and a 7-speed manual transmission. For purists, the 9X9 Leichtbau is the ultimate driver’s car, featuring a naturally aspirated 4.0L engine, six-speed manual gearbox, and a stripped-down interior for a weight of just 1250 kg.
