INK recreates lancia rally 037 using CGI

INK pays tribute to the Lancia Rally 037, the last two-wheel-drive car to win the World Rally Championship. This automotive art car is a new addition to the creative studio’s Brutal Beasts series, joining the likes of the Ferrari P4 and McLaren M6GT. On October 7th, 1983, the Lancia Rally 037 won its fifth World Constructors’ title at the Sanremo Rally competition. On May 27th, 2024, the car manufacturer introduced its Lancia Ypsilon Rally 4 HF on the same day it announced its return to the world of rallying, starting from the basics of competition, Rally 4. To celebrate its comeback, creative studio INK reimagines the Lancia Rally 037, rebuilt using CGI technology.

New addition to brutal beasts series

Stark gray is the primary color of the rebuilt Lancia Rally 037. INK turns to CGI to detail the car’s structure and design elements. The technology helped the creative studio capture the vehicle’s nuances while assembling it to INK’s signature minimal aesthetic. The result is a new addition to the creative studio’s Brutal Beasts series, an anthology of their remake of ‘the most lawless racing cars ever created.’

The series looks at the era of Group B Rallying, where its set of regulations paved the way for some of the most powerful rallying cars created. INK describes it as ‘the golden era of rallying.’ Group B was introduced in 1982, but after the death of Henri Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto at the 1986 Tour de Corse, the series was banned.

Paying homage to Group B Rallying with art car

INK remembers the era well, enough to compel them to design their art car for the Lancia Rally 037. The design team says it was Audi’s Quattro S1 E2 that emerged as the first winning car under the Group B regulations with its relatively new four-wheel-drive technology. Lancia created a rival for Audi’s car and ended up with a rear-wheel car composed of lightweight materials and existing technology and components. The result was the Lancia Rally 037, the car that beat Audi’s Quattro S1 E2 at the 1983 Monte Carlo Rally by just two points. After the 1985 season, the Lancia Rally 037 retired from the race, only to be brought back 39 years later by INK as digital imagery using CGI.
