indian motorcycle's scout is a blacked-out street bobber

indian motorcycle’s image was heavily reliant on retro-styled aesthetics to capture attention, but the US-based bike manufacturer soon realized it would have to diversify if it were to challenge the harley davidson’s of this world. with the rise of victory motorcycles in the cruiser segment, this meant indian would drop the leather tassels in favour of a whole lot more connected technology.

the 2018 indian motorcycle ‘scout’ bobber relies on nostalgia to tap into the long history of the bike, with a host of modifications to give it a contemporary feel. most of the changes are aesthetic, while a few things have been altered to enhance the bike’s aggressive attitude and ride. it has chopped off the fenders, and the seat was reupholstered to create a darker look. there are new, minimalist engine covers, and small bar-end mirrors now give the bike more of a ‘stripped down’ appearance.

the original ‘scout’s’ swept bar is now replaced with a new tracker-style bar, and the footpegs have been moved an inch and a half towards the rider, offering greater comfort. the large exhaust, and gauge face, are now blacked out, while the classic indian font on the side of the tank now takes the form of new block lettering to continue with the muscular theme. the motor, brakes, gearing, all remain unchanged, but the US bike-maker has altered the riding position, and suspension, giving the ‘scout bobber’ a different feel. the rear shocks have also been shortened from three-inches, to two-inches, offering an inch lower ride height at the back.
