LEMMO one hybrid e-bike shifts between manual/electric riding seamlessly

Lemmo One wins best of the best red dot design award

Bringing riders the best of both worlds, LEMMO One combines the benefits of a conventional bicycle and an e-bike, effectively resolving the conflict that consumers often face when deciding between the two options. The 2023 Red Dot: Best of the Best winner offers a seamless transition between the two modes just by attaching or pulling out the Smartpac – a slim bike-bag-looking box that amongst other components, contains GPS, the battery, and motor controller.

With a passion for cutting-edge design and advanced smart technology, Lemmo draws inspiration from the Berlin state of mind and seeks to be a leader in micromobility. Driven by sustainability, the company embraces the principles of flexibility and affordability, aims to revolutionize inner-city transportation in the era of electrification and smartism. Consequently, the mission of LEMMO One is to offer an environmentally-friendly e-bike solution that give people the freedom they deserve, whether they are riding, playing or working. Winner of the 2023 Red Dot: Best of the Best, LEMMO One invites riders to explore the hybrid, effortless transition of the two operations.

‘The Red Dot Award means a lot to our internal design team and also to external partners – it is recognition for their hard work. (The award) also brings a lot more visibility to the brand and to the product, but what I feel is most important is the recognition that we get from this well-known organization, that we are on the right path,’ says Toni Pavic, Head of Branding and Partner of Lemmo, in an interview designboom.

the ‘E+Bike’ concept gives the user the ability to ride a commercial bicycle without any resistance or to switch into an electric experience

the smartpac box powers the bike at any moment

LEMMO One is built with the ‘E+Bike’ concept, giving the user the ability to ride a conventional bicycle without any resistance or to switch into a smooth electric experience. At the core of this hybrid product lie two patented mechanisms. The first is the Smartpac, a sleek and compact detachable component engineered to house the bike’s battery, motor control, and GPS tracker. The design not only optimizes space utilization, but also reduces the overall weight of the product. Without Smartpac, the e-bike becomes even lighter, shedding off approximately three kilograms (15kg).

‘LEMMO One is a product based on ‘E+Bike’ concept, which means separating electric parts from the bike. Instead of having them integrated in the bike, they’re all packed into a box we call Smartpac. Smartpac itself is multifunctional as it integrates the battery and an IoT motor controller, while it also acts as a powerbank that you can use to charge your device. When you remove the Smartpac you have the pure experience of cycling a conventional bicycle without any resistance,’ continues Toni.

riders can completely detach the motor and pedal manually

The second technological advancement is the bike’s Dual Mode Hub, featuring a specially designed clutch mechanism incorporated into the 250-watt hub motor. This enables riders to completely disengage the motor from the hub, effectively eliminating any pedaling resistance. Consequently, when operating in manual mode, LEMMO One can effortlessly be maneuvered like a traditional bicycle, allowing riders to enjoy the authentic cycling experience.

in e-mode, the Smartpac is seamlessly integrated into the frame triangle, creating an appearance much like a slim bike bag

Coupled with a sleek aesthetic design implementation, the e-bike’s performance in both configurations (electric and manual), as well as its seamless ability to adapt to the rider’s preferences, granted the project its Best of the Best distinction. When in e-mode, the Smartpac is seamlessly integrated into the frame triangle, creating a visually cohesive appearance much like a slim bike bag. For cycling with muscle power, it can be quickly detached and simply pulled out, simplifying the process and switch between the two functions.

‘The most important thing here is the hybrid freedom. We see a tech nomad as a person who likes to work from anywhere. He can bring LEMMO One to his favorite coffee place and charge it while he works. He can even take it to the park and continue there since he can charge his devices using Smartpac,’ explains Toni.

when in need for an upgraded version of the bike, upgrading just the Smartpac technology is enough

In addition, the bundling of most electronic components in the Smartpac and on the hub motor has the advantage that they can be easily maintained and replaced if necessary. Overall, the appearance of the bicycle is classic and very tidy. The cables and wires run mostly inside the frame, while the aluminum frame is assembled using no-welding technology brought in from the aeronautical industry, resulting in harmonious transitions between the components.

‘The product follows a very environmentally friendly approach. The bicycle itself can be ridden for 10-15 years, while technologies are upgraded every five years. So, when you need to upgrade the technology, you can simply upgrade the Smartpac, not the whole bike,’ adds the Brand Director.
