hybrid-electric airplane ES-30 ‘type’ certification in 2028

Heart Aerospace develops its hybrid-electric airplane, the ES-30, and aims to achieve its type certification by 2028. After that, the aircraft may start regional flights for up to 30 passengers at a time. The regional electric vehicle uses motors powered by battery-derived energy. It can guarantee a zero-emission range of 200 kilometers, with an extended hybrid range of 400 kilometers for 30 passengers and up to 800 kilometers with 25 passengers.

So far, Heart Aerospace has already secured 250 orders for the ES-30, with options and purchase rights for another 120 airplanes. The company also has letters of intent for further 191 airplanes. Since the ES-30 is a hybrid plane, it can also go up to 800 kilometers if it doesn’t use its all-electric setting. The hybrid-electric airplane can be recharged in 30 minutes and can take off from smaller airports with around 1,100 meters of runway length.

Heart aerospace produces the aircraft demonstrator in 2024

Heart Aerospace is set to produce the demonstrator of its hybrid-electric airplane, the ES-30, in 2024. It is expected to fly in 2025, and after that, the Gothenburg-based Swedish company targets its flight ‘type’ certification by 2028 before commencing regional flights.

The technology team already ran a full-scale test bench for the airplane’s design and integration of key aircraft systems in 2022. They also validated the flight characteristics and profile for electric aircraft back in 2021. In May 2024, Heart Aerospace opened their Research and Development hub in the US.

Regional flights to and from region gotland island

The research and development hub is  based in Los Angeles. Here, they focus on furthering the hybrid-electric airplane’s battery and propulsion systems, as well as other technologies. Their headquarters remain in Sweden, but the company plans to relocate its full-scale aircraft demonstrator to the US.

In June 2024, the company signed a collaboration agreement with Region Gotland, the largest island in the Baltic Sea. The objective is to deliver regional flights. This can help the island’s tourism during peak seasons, and Region Gotland has the goal of having at least one operator fly commercially with electric aircraft to and from the island. As of publishing this story, Heart Aerospace is still developing the ES-30 for its take-off around 2028.
