Cruising anywhere with a portable ride stowed in a backpack is an idea that has now come to fruition with Italian startup Linky Innovation set to release what the design team describes as the world’s first foldable electric longboard, the Linky 2.0. It folds in half and expands to save space when the rider needs to stow it in a backpack. The birch wood surface, customizable in color, may remind riders of the design of a paddle racket. Combine that style with two wheels, and the rider now has a magic carpet ride on a wooden plank.

The Linky 2.0 also features all-terrain wheels with anti-hydroplane properties to ensure grip regardless of road conditions. With a diameter of 210.5 mm, these wheels allow the longboard to traverse bumpy roads, and their notched surface and integrated mudguards can handle water and gravel without hassle. The colors of these wheels can be customized, adding a personal touch to the rider’s experience.

Birch wood with high-strength plastic polymers

Linky Innovation’s team assures riders who aren’t yet sold on the folding mechanism of their foldable electric longboard, stating that their use of high-strength plastic polymers combined with ‘our engineering experience allowed us to make this system both sturdy and light.’ They claim to have tested the prototype for hundreds of kilometers and even subjected the portable ride to strenuous activities, including jumping on the central part of the folding system. ‘Basically, if you don’t run it over with a car, it’ll be fine,’ says the design team.

Airline-safe collapsible skateboard

In terms of power, the Linky 2.0 is equipped with two 750W belt motors, giving the rider a speed of up to 26 mph (42 kph). Its 185 Wh long-range battery allows the foldable electric longboard to cruise for up to 14 miles on a single charge. For riders who want to bring it abroad or during travels, the Linky 2.0 also offers a 99 Wh airline-safe option. The battery charges up to 80% in just 40 minutes, and the collapsible skateboard features a sealed electronic compartment with IP65 water and dust resistance to protect its electric components.

Riders can download the dedicated app for the collapsible skateboard to control and adjust the brake and acceleration curve of their ride. They also receive Linky 2.0’s external remote with a wrist strap, allowing them to set their speed, activate the mini headlight positioned at the front of the foldable electric longboard, and monitor the battery percentage. The design team mentions that the parts are replaceable too for easy maintenance and are air-cooled for stable performance of the powertrain.

The foldable electric longboard can support up to 100 kilograms of weight, and the team recommends that riders wear appropriate athletic shoes and protective equipment when using the Linky 2.0. As of publishing the story, the collapsible skateboard’s campaign is live, assuring fans that if they place their orders, they can receive the Linky 2.0 within 180 days along with a backpack for storage.
