finnish startup eve-tech has set-up an online community of technology enthusiasts to help shape the final design of its latest device. the company gained a lot of user feedback since the launch of it’s first laptop, the ‘t1 tablet computer’, including criticism towards the quality of the outer shell, rear camera, and ports. co-founder and CEO konstantinos karatsevidis didn’t see this response as disparaging in the slightest, so he asked himself: ‘what if those people could provide feedback during the design process so it could be incorporated into the final product?’

the idea hasn’t just received interest from the likes of microsoft and intel, but also ‘heavy support’ in the product’s devel0pment with a six-figure sum.

‘we really wanted to let end users tell us what the perfect device has to be like. we have been selecting each and every feature of the device with them. things like the form factor; device material; display; etc.’, comments karatsevidis.

the device is typically representative of the simplistic; elegant; nordic design. working closely with design agency propeller–a swedish design studio that has been serving brands since 1990–both companies were able to hone in on refining the laptop. final design decisions have yet to be made, but  for now karatsevidis can tell us that the ‘eve v’ is a windows 10 device with a 12-hour battery life; 12.3-inch screen; and plenty of ports (thunderbolt, usb A and usb C). it has four speakers and a dedicated audio amplifier. the body is carved from a single piece of aluminum and comes in a range of colors; the community is currently selecting the final options.

‘we realized that our users value design and build quality and we decided to make our device from aluminum using CNC process. each device starts its journey as a single solid block of aluminum that is later carved by CNC machines into a seamless looking slate. unlike die casting, process used for the most consumer electronics, CNC allows to use way more finishing and texture options as well as to achieve minimal gaps in the casing giving it a very solid look and feel. ‘, he states when describing ‘eve-v’s’ manufacturing process.
