Turbofan wheels for concept electric coupe BMW CSi

Designer Jang Hun Choi creates a concept electric coupe named BMW CSi inspired by the brand’s electric vehicle ‘i’. It features turbofan wheels from the race cars in the 1980s to evoke a retro feel to a modern twist of a BMW coupe. The designer says he combines the elements of car competition sports (CS) and the manufacturer’s ‘i’ series for this concept electric coupe. Looking at the side, the overall proportion follows BMW’s classic 3-box shape, inspired by the BMW cars from the 1970s and 1980s.

Jang Hun Choi adjusts the design elements so that they don’t look overly retro since he still wants his concept electric coupe BMW CSi to appear modern. He does add a line on the car frame’s side to define the body, which starts from the hood and then disappears over the rear wheel, and the lower part of the vehicle is naturally shaped by the volume. The upper rear part has a sky-directed tail, while the lower section looks elevated from the ground.

What can draw passersby to look at the concept electric coupe BMW CSi may be its front design because Jang Hun Choi puts the large kidney grille closer to the bumper instead of the traditional position at the top. He says he’s following the Bauhaus principle of ‘form follows function’ with the approach. He also moves the cooling intake at the lower section to allow for a wider Daytime Running Light (DRL) across the top.

The location of the DRL is drawn from the extended front end of the classic BMW 3.0 CSI. Even the angle of the DRL pays homage to the traditional BMW 3.0 CSI ‘shark nose’ design, appearing bent inward on the concept electric coupe BMW CSi. When it comes to the taillights, the designer replicates the style of the front DRL by designing the lens area in 3D form for added depth. At the moment the BMW CSi is a concept electric coupe, but for Jang Hun Choi, it signals the mix of classic and modern design elements topped with future-oriented overalls.
