ahead of the 2020 geneva motor show, citroën has unveiled an electric, two-seater city car that people as young as 14 can drive. the citroën ami, which was introduced as a concept last year, offers a sort of ‘subscription’ service and a part-payment plan for just $22 a month.

to buy one outright will cost from €6,000 (approximately $6,592), but you’ll also be able to get one for just €19.99 ($21.90) a month with a €2,644 deposit ($2,900). there is also a car-sharing option via the free2move program, which will cost 26 eurocents (29 US cents) a minute on top of a monthly subscription of 9.90 euros ($10.90).

the compact citroën ami is perfect for narrow city streets with a top speed of 45 km/h (28mph) and a 5.5kwh battery under the floor. range is 70km, or just over 43 miles and will recharge fully from a normal socket in just 3 hours.

the ami is short enough to park head-on to the kerb and it’s not actually classified as a motor vehicle. as such, there’s no driver’s license required since it’s classified as an electric quadricycle making the tiny electric car available to 14-year-olds in france.

citroën is taking orders for the ami starting on march 30 in france and several months later in spain, italy, belgium, portugal and then germany. the first ami vehicles are expected by june. the car-sharing version of the ami will be available starting in paris this spring.
