apple announces four iPhone 12 models, all with 5G capability

apple has announced four iPhone 12 models, all with 5G capability. the four new devices are as follows: iPhone 12 mini; iPhone 12; iPhone 12 pro; and iPhone 12 pro max. all models feature expansive edge-to-edge super retina XDR displays for a brighter, more immersive viewing experience, and a ceramic shield front cover. the devices also introduce MagSafe, offering wireless charging capabilities and accessories that easily attach to the phone. ‘the apple-designed A14 bionic, the fastest chip in a smartphone, powers every experience on iPhone 12, and coupled with an advanced dual-camera system, delivers meaningful new computational photography features and the highest quality video in a smartphone,’ apple explains.

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini will be available in five aluminum finishes: blue, green, black, white, and (PRODUCT)RED. iPhone 12 has a diagonal screen size of 6.1 inches (155mm), while iPhone 12 mini has a diagonal screen size of 5.4 inches (137mm). both models come with three capacity options: 64GB; 128GB; or 256GB. iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, described by apple as the smallest, thinnest, and lightest 5G smartphone in the world, have an IP68 rating for water resistance up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes, and are protected against ‘everyday spills’. prices start at $799 USD for iPhone 12 and $699 USD for iPhone 12 mini. a full list of specifications can be seen here.

MagSafe wireless charging introduces an ‘ecosystem’ of accessories that complement iPhone 12 models. featuring an array of magnets around the wireless charging coil, MagSafe chargers provide up to 15W of power, while still accommodating existing qi-enabled devices. charging solutions include the MagSafe charger and MagSafe duo charger for use with iPhone and apple watch, as well as new silicone, leather, and clear cases that easily snap onto the back of iPhone.

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini boast an advanced camera system that features the ‘ultra wide’ camera and a new ‘wide’ camera with an ƒ/1.6 aperture, the fastest yet on iPhone, providing 27% more light. meanwhile, ‘night mode’ and ‘deep fusion’ are now present on all cameras for improved photos in any environment. pre-orders for iPhone 12 begin october 16, with availability beginning october 23, 2020. iPhone 12 mini will be available for pre-order beginning november 6, and in stores beginning november 13, 2020.

iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 pro max will be available in four stainless steel finishes: graphite, silver, gold, and pacific blue. iPhone 12 pro has a diagonal screen size of 6.1 inches (155mm), the same as iPhone 12, while iPhone 12 pro max has a diagonal screen size of 6.7 inches (170mm). both models come with three capacity options: 128GB; 256GB; and 512GB. in addition, iPhone 12 pro models introduce a new LiDAR scanner for immersive augmented reality (AR) experiences. prices start at $999 USD for iPhone 12 pro and $1,099 USD for iPhone 12 pro max. a full list of specifications can be seen here.

iPhone 12 pro features the new seven-element lens wide camera with an ƒ/1.6 aperture, the fastest ever on an iPhone, for 27% improved low-light performance in photo and video; the ultra wide camera with a 120-degree field of view, perfect for capturing more scene in tight spots or landscapes; and a 52 mm focal length telephoto camera for framing portraits, bringing the optical zoom range to 4x.

meanwhile, iPhone 12 pro max takes the pro camera experience even further. the new ƒ/1.6 aperture wide camera boasts a 47% larger sensor with 1.7μm pixels for an 87% improvement in low-light conditions. it also includes the expansive ultra wide camera and a 65 mm focal length telephoto camera for increased flexibility with closer shots and tighter crops. combined, this system offers 5x optical zoom range.

the all-new LiDAR scanner comes to the ‘pro’ line, offering the ability to measure light distance and use pixel depth information of a scene. apple says that this technology delivers faster, more realistic AR experiences and improves autofocus by 6x in low-light scenes for more accuracy and reduced capture time in photos and videos. this advanced hardware, combined with the power of the neural engine of A14 Bionic, also unlocks ‘night mode’ portraits, rendering a beautiful low-light bokeh effect.
