‘piatti tipici’ by marta lavinia carboni
today, cities have ever-growing numbers of ethnic minority residents. how are they integrating with the local culture? with cuisine being the most direct way to experience different cultures, italian designer marta lavinia carboni has developed ‘piatti tipici’, a series of dishes that visually showcase the fusion of these traditional foods through graphic representations.
by researching multiple meal combinations that can be prepared with local ingredients available in milan, data is collected to conceive eleven unique color variations for each plate. through photographic grouping, the dishes take influence by the way the food is prepared, then rendered on a computer to create decals for adhering to hand-made ceramic dishes by puzzo. her research demonstrates that with ‘size-contrast illusions’, the serving portion is greater based on the intensity of the pattern.
