Project
YER-fan was designed by Friso Dijkstra of StudioFriso for the Istanbul Bienale.
There it is being presented at Mavra Café alongside YER-mattress, the work of Borre Akkersdijk.

The opium-flower looking shape made of ‘cooling-ribs’ is made out of 158 aluminium pieces, held together by it’s own construction, fixated in place by special glue that can resist high temperatures in order to powdercoat. The two pieces that form the fan’s body are bolted together and rests on the floor by its own shape and weight. Two small ‘feet’ hold the fan from rolling around.

The result is a single position floor-fan that is going to made in a powdercoated as well as a anodized aluminium version.

Istanbul Bienale
Dutch organisation Salon1.org created small exposition places in the city, outside Bienale limits itself; involving fashion-, product- and graphic designers, as well as artists. All projects are inspired by or developed with local traditions or craftsmen.
Together with textile designer Borre Akkersdijk, Friso Dijkstra created the project ‘YER’, meaning ‘place’, ‘ground’ or ‘local’. This project was inspired by traditional seating places and teahouses where people would sit close to the floor. Borre Akkersdijk used his unique textile process to create an actual mattress. The following text about the project YER was added to the IKSV program.
An element of mystery has always pervaded old stories about Istanbul. Paintings of Istanbul illustrated rich fabrics and beautiful brass and copperware. Images depicted a spirited social life which took place close to the floor, in tea houses that were decorated with tapestries and cushions; the shaded space (to oppose the heat) contrasting the vivid colours of the fabrics and metalware.
‘The West’ has always been inspired by this, acquiring different elements of it throughout history. From ‘Boudoir style’ to certain aspects of the hippy style.
