wine and cheese platter by Liam Mugavin from australia
designer's own words:
This elegantly balanced design allows people to enjoy wine and food at parties and functions with ease by freeing up the users hand. It addresses an often occurring dilemma at events, trying to hold a plate of finger food and wine at the same time.
The design was inspired by the aboriginal Coolamon, a wooden vessel used to carry food and water. The traditional Coolamon concept of natural material and concave form was used to inform a modern design.
By utilising traditional Japanese Kanna (hand plane) and Hinoki (Japanese cypress) a veneer laminating technique was developed to complement the natural form and lines of the design. This manufacture technique therefore reinforces the design and contributes to the subtitles of the design.
The platter is ergonomically, aesthetically and environmentally sensitive. The scooped surface was designed to fit the palm and minimise wrist deviation from its natural position, therefore providing comfort and ease. The subtle lines, curves and surface convey a refined product. Minimal material and ecofriendly resin is used to reduce the product’s environmental impact. Every attribute of the design including ergonomics, form and manufacture technique complement each other to and works together to produce a well encompassed and functional design.
