uma chair

uma chair by cristina pulido from spain

designer's own words:

the making of uma chair is an unconventional process which reduces the cost and time of the piece manufacturing. the initial idea was born when doing origami with a piece of paper, i created a very interesting visually light shape similar to a crib. the challenge was to design a wooden chair keeping these qualities and at the same time ergonomic and versatile. as far as the aesthetic character of this piece, the objective was to use textiles and contrast them with the texture of wood in a slick way. from the synthesis of this exercise and after experimenting with various configurations, uma chair was born. There are two additional configurations uma-b and uma-c based in the same concept.

materials:
timber wood board 19 mm
plywood 19 mm for lateral modules
waterborn fabric from kvadrat
chromed steel tube 20mm diameter
polyurethane sheet 10 mm

manufacturing process:
the chair is made with two triangular modules attached to a fabric pattern previously sealed with heat. these lateral arm modules are cut from the timber wood board and the rest of the triangular modules are made from the plywood board. they all are attached by the sides with a spike like joint. the fabric pattern allows to create a structure that is reinforced when is thermo-sealed by the edge of each triangular module (see scheme). the chair is upholstered between the plywood and the fabric to create a soft texture for the user. the legs are built with a 20 mm chromed steel tube and secured with screws to the wooden modules of the base of the chair.
