designer's own words:

Turtles are one of my favorite animals and I think their hexagonal shell shapes make for good designs. While I was drawing out the shell for my turtle, I noticed that it would be possible to place an "H" right in the center of the shell and have it act as the pattern for the shell. I thought this was a good way to integrate the notable Hermes "H" within the turtle design. The "H", along with the vertical and horizontal squares on the shell make a cross-hatch pattern throughout the tie. This was actually a happy accident. The hardest part about making this motif was getting a good color scheme since the turtle alone had 5 colors in it. I think this is the kind of tie you have to stare at for a minute before you realize what the pattern really is.
