Toro by Liam Mugavin from australia
designer's own words:
Light is normally perceived as negative space and solid form as positive space. This is a construct of our sensors. Light and air also have matter and can be a positive design element.
Toro borrows from the past and the design of traditional lanterns, where the frame is positive space and the rice paper is negative space. This new design swaps the negative and positive space and therefore shifts the traditional lantern into the future.
It is made from a laser cut acrylic frame that is similar to the rice paper lantern frame. The outside material is porcelain that is cut to shape. The porcelain is similar to rice paper and is porous, allowing small amount of light to shine through.
Through the use of modern and traditional material and a new perspective, Toro offers a future take to the outdated lantern.
