THIN THRESHOLD: deathLandscapes. by mercedes p from argentina
designer's own words:
I designed a structure which could talk about the beauty of a single moment, the darkness of the unknown and the brightness of considering afterlife celebration as a sacred ceremony to release grief. Many commonly known death care devices are morbid and consist of a globalized element of purchase. I consider this landscape sculpture unique. Symmetry expresses an idea of balanced harmony between what was lived and what remains after. The clear unity of two equal parts creates a single body of light tube masses. It is tensed enough in order to remain in place, but at the same time fragile and soft. There is an ambiguity of distinction between the sensation of being inside and outside at the same time, as it has no envelope or skin. It operates as a shading system and also as a topographic element of nature, lifting from the ground and almost floating in the air. The sinuous lines are motifs of nature, or human body’s nerves which suggest craft rather than serial industrial processes to achieve form. It works as a device to host a funeral in an open area. A client could choose either to use it during night or daytime. The structure is built upon an iron mesh through which climbing plants cover its surface. Vegetation mutates slowly through season change and color variation is noticed as any life cycle transformation.
