the INFINITI orchestra is on stage! by aiste valiute from lithuania

designer's own words:

concept description:

inspiring car can become a piece of art in the hands of virtuoso. we offer live concert where high-tech potential and human talent merge into a coherence of a magnificent magnum opus.

the main idea is to transform infiniti cars into music instruments by remotely controlling their engine rpm's in order to achieve required sound which would be mixed live by the performer on stage into integral musical composition. captured sounds from the cars would be transmitted onto the stage and would become a music composition when being played by the performer. the entire performance would take place in both, exterior and interior - outer and inner parts of the location and thus would be attractive to the spectator despite his standpoint. instrumental part of the orchestra would be based outdoors and the scene with the performer as well as live video projections from the outside would be installed inside.

as the shows would be organized during the showroom openings all over europe, the musical composition to be performed could be beethoven's 9th symphony 'ode to joy', which is a well known masterpiece and also the anthem of the european union.

installation components and locations:

a) infiniti cars orchestra (located outside):
in order to introduce a full range of production and for spectators to experience different 'notes' between the models, the idea is to involve as many different car models as infiniti can offer.

b) stage for the performer (located inside):
we would offer a solution of subtly designed control panel operated by the performer which could either appear on the stage (better solution for the standing audience) or just on the ground (if there is seated arrangements).

c) performer (located inside):
the idea is to give a live concert, therefore the performer should be able to play music and to operate necessary equipment to carry out the performance on the spot. upon the request, there is a possibility for the whole performance to be fully programmed.

d) live video projections of the 'instruments' (located inside):
as 'instruments' are very extraordinary and interesting we offer to set up live video projections from each of them concentrating on the processes induced by capturing the sound. it would be filmed with integrated cameras and transmitted onto the screen behind the performer. projections could be created from different views (4, 6, 8, ...) where engine's 'working' process could be observed. we would like to show the details of the cars, which perform at the certain time, so that action taking place outside could be transferred to the audience inside.

technical description:

to obtain optimal results, we offer following technical solution:

a) all cars located outside would be equipped with microphones which would allow captured sound to be transmitted to the inside space of the location, i.e. to the control panel on stage and subsequently to the audience.

b) each car would be connected to the controller through the accelerator pedal position sensor connection.

c) in order to achieve a certain note at a certain time, sensor connection will be provided by necessary resistance and will simulate the change of acceleration pedal position which will make engine of a certain car run at needed rpm's (and that will provide the correct note).

d) by controlling car engines and mixing the incoming sound the performer would express musical composition through the speakers to the audience.
