The Helix Door Handle

designer's own words:

there are many door handles that are beautiful to look at, but there are very few that offer an aesthetic experience that goes beyond a static form. the helix door handle is designed to not only look good, but to engage the user’s sense of touch through physical transformation. when in its closed position, the helix appears as a compact modern form, but upon turning the handle, the pivoting blades of the helix twist into a fan-like form. not only is this movement visually appealing, it also serves to interact with the user’s tactile sensibilities, providing a new and more ergonomic form with which to pull a door open.

while seemingly complex in structure, the mechanism behind the helix’s movement is surprisingly simple. the handle consists of 5 molded steel components connected by means of two internal springs. when twisted, the springs maintain a uniform helical relationship between the components and aligns them vertically when closed. designed to be easily manufactured and interface seamlessly with existing door hardware standards, the helix offers an entirely new way to open a door.
