The primary premise of the furniture is about finding one’s center by positioning themselves in any way they see fit. The position ranges from the fetal, in the womb, to an out stretched position that signifies maturity. This idea is where the form of the project was conceived.
The secondary premise is that the chair is able to function in any environment and this is where the name, The Getaway Chair, was conceived.
The chair seats two people
The chair is skinned with glass so that one can observe all 360 degrees
The chair is set on pontoons so that it could sit on water, snow or land
The holes on the pontoons are operable so when it opens, water could get inside and the chair would sink
There are also valves at the back of the chair that look like exhaust so the sinking process could occur faster
Those valves are also connected to the oxygen tanks that would rid the chair of the water and the chair would then resurface
The chair could also sit in a living room. A hose can be connected to fill the inner portion of the skin with water to create the illusion of being underwater and to distort basic senses (sound and sight). This would isolate one from their everyday environment.
