the cocoon by andy lam from canada
designer's own words:
Being adults, we will never know exactly what furniture the teenagers really like. We can only provide them with a safe and sound structure and upon which, the teens will be able to explore and do whatever they want. Besides, furniture is not really that cool to teens. They prefer something that is a cross between furniture and toy. Cocoon is designed to be a half furniture, half toy structure. The basic unit of each Cocoon is a quarter spherical molded structure with a diameter of 1.3m (51”). The exterior material can be soft type engineered polymer or high density foam. Buried 65mm (2.5”) down the foam is a frame made of stamped aluminum sheet. The foam is thick enough to stop the metal frame from being exposed. It also creates a strong friction with the floor and so makes the rolling much slower.
Cocoon also provides the customers with freedom of choice. Each unit will be packed and sold as 1 unit. Customers will be able to choose and buy whatever colour and quantity they want. When mass produced in China, each unit is estimated to cost around 60 US dollars. Cocoon is suitable for familyrooms, bedrooms, schools, playgrounds and daycare centres. Cocoon is made of foam and sheet metal only, and so makes it easy to be disassembled for material recycling. It is going to help save our environment.
