designer's own words:

Function As Design. The FAD is a work of art, a trend setter as well as a functional piece of furniture.
It is multi-functional and modular. It converts with ease from a storage unit to a seat.
It can be used alone as a nightstand or side table, or in groupings of 2 or more as a two seat sofa (when the main storage unit is removed) or a sideboard (when the storage units are in place)or a large table.
The FAD contains a large storage bin within the ‘body’ of the unit. There is additional recessed storage on both sides of the FAD for magazines or books. On the top of the FAD there are removeable receptacles for cell phones, I Pods, drinks etc: anything a teenager could need is close at hand. There is also a large drawer under the seat for the storage of various items including CD’s.
The removal of the main storage bin converts the FAD to a comfortable seat; the back of which is curved for comfort and aesthetic appeal (separate cushions would be an optional extra). The storage bins themselves are modular and stackable and can be tucked away in a corner when not in place or used as a side table, or even an ice bucket!!
The FAD is constructed of ¾” engineered wood that is laminated on both sides. Many choices would be available; including photographic images, metallics and patterns designed exclusively for the product. New designs could be brought out each season. There is the added option of magnetic, white and chalkboard laminate; this would allow the FAD to be used as a message board.
The FAD is assembled using knock down fasteners so if both sides of each section were laminated the unit could be re-configured inside out to change the look at will.
The storage bins would be manufactured out of acrylic or polycarbonate for maximum optical clarity. These would be available in a variety of colours to coordinate with the laminates. The lid of the FAD could also be made out of a clear acrylic or out of a laminated substrate.
The removeable receptacles on the surface of the FAD would be made from polypropylene for easy cleaning and again would be available in numerous colours.
A separate cushion would be available in a variety of fabrics – buttoned or plain.
The FAD would be available with straight metallic legs or casters.

I have no doubt in my mind that the FAD could be the next BIG thing in teenage furniture. It is cool, stylish, never boring and would be as appealing to a boy as a girl and as suitable for a 13 year old's bedroom as it would be for a dorm room.
