designer's own words:
This product was made as a part of a design module of the the course Lifestyle Accessory Design at National Institute of Design. The project was to explore the coiling technique in different materials to generate volume. The coiling was carried out in various materials like metal wire, sheet metal, felt, plastic pipe, jute rope, foam sheet, leather, fabric and so on. The enhance the coiling effect i used a combination of white armour foam with colored foam sheet. The effect that it created was very interesting. It resembled a 'Swiss Roll'. For creating volume the form was amended. Each coil was gradually lifted up from one point which resembled a seating. The concept was detailed and a scale down model using U foam and nevaar was done to understand it better. Further a live size prototype helped me to decide on the right size and thickness of the foam. Foam was selected to ensure comfort and durability and the nevaar added support and turned out to be a good design element. The foam is covered with canvas cotton material and dyed a light beige, the nevaar was dyed a bright tomato red. The coils are kept in place using firm stitches. 'Swiss Roll' is a perfect relaxing seating for a contemporary home with a touch of playful colors.
