Second Knob by sing kai chong from usa
designer's own words:
there are many objects in our daily lives that we use without even thinking. do these objects seem effortless to manipulate because they are so perfectly designed, or have we just grown accustomed to their use? the second knob answers this question by redesigning one of these objects. an average person spends about two seconds to walk through a door. out of those two seconds, half of that time is wasted on moving his or her hand from one door handle to the other while standing still. the second knob is a set of door knobs that are able to freely rotate 360 degrees. with this feature, the sk allows the user to hold onto the knob as he or she walks through the door, which eliminates the need to stop and move his or her hand. as a result, every time the second knob is used, a second is saved.
the second knob is designed to be as simple as possible. it is basically a pair of knobs mounted on a rotating platform. the platform not only holds the knobs in place, but also houses the mechanisms for the knobs and bolts. using a simple axle, the platform is then attached to the door. the door also has a recess and a strike plate on the side of the cutout to accommodate the extra bolt. the sk has two bolts, both of which are identical and retract simultaneously when either knob is activated. when the door is closed, one bolt extends into the door frame just like a classic door, while the other one goes into the recess on the door to prevent the knobs from rotating. the shape and measurements of the sk are made to fit industry standard mechanisms, yet it can be made with a variety of finishes, such as stainless steel or wood, to suit different applications. if the door needs to be locked, a standard lock mechanism can be added on the knob, or a separate dead bolt can be added on the door.
for many years, variations of door handles have revolved around the same basic idea, but even an object as ordinary as a doorknob can be improved to make our days just a tiny bit easier. the second knob is a simple device that simplifies opening and closing doors. the trip through the door is now twice as fast, and the wrist twisting motion that we are all so accustomed to is now obsolete. this is not an unrealistic concept gimmick either. this is the second generation knob.
