BACKGROUND
SATURN, as said in Roman mythology was first identified as a god of generation, dissolution, plenty, wealth, agriculture, periodic renewal and liberation. In later developments, this mythological character came to be a GOD OF TIME. Saturn´s reign was described as a Golden Age of plenty and peace. Saturn was celebrated in one of the most famous of the Roman festivals, the Saturnalia, a time of feasting, role reversals, free speech, gift-giving and revelry.
The idea of the proposal is the fact that ELDERLY NOWADAYS ARE REALLY ACTIVE, so they could ANTICIPATE THEIR OWN ADVENTURES: a trip, an unexpected dinner, a family visit, a party... that could last a while or a few days. It is important that you could carry your pills without forgetting them.
The anticipation of the future of our society is, as said by the World Health Organization, that "between 2000 and 2050, […] the absolute number of people aged 60 years and over is expected to increase from 605 million to 2 billion over this period"
PROPOSAL
The work presented is a piece of jewelry thought for the elderly, since it hides a pill box -or various of them- between its beads and this accessory could be DESIGNED AND REDESIGNED in an very easy way every time the person plans or anticipates an event.
ONE SIZE MAGNET RING + THREE SIZE MAGNET SPHERES = DIFFERENT (pillbox) NECKLACES FOR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS
The fact that the necklaces could be mounted by the owner, will also help elderly with their fine motor skills training in a very easy and amusing way, as the spheres are assembled with MAGNETS and all the spheres of different sizes and materials could be combined with the rings in a random manner or if preferred, in an organized/neatly way. With rings of the same size and three sized spheres a great variety of necklaces could be designed.
So, the fact of depending on pills instead of being something with negative connotations, converts it into something elegant, creative, full of fun and even good for health!!
The experience of anticipating the next adventure will materialize preparing the own pillbox with the necessary containers, the user then becomes a designer. The number of spheres, colors, size, and even the material could be chosen according to the experience you are going to live. Several versions could be assembled…IT´S UP TO YOUR IMAGINATION!!!
POTENTIAL OF THE PROPOSAL: For a second design and production phase -maintaining the same concept- the possibilities of designing more complex figures is unlimited, as the connector ring could be designed with different carved shapes in the inside or outside part and another progress of the proposal could be introducing different sizes of rings, in this way the previous simple combination could be more complex and better brain-training!
The object is not yet prototyped.
The possible materials in which the necklaces could be manufactured:
For the half-spheres -all finished with magnetic surface in the edge. Different sizes 3, 4, 5 cms. of external diameter:
• METALS, such as matt finished or polished 925 sterling silver 20-22 gauge sheet, matt finished stainless steel sheet, stove color enameled metal, hammered brass sheet.
• WOOD. Hand-carved black ebony, oak or cocobolo wood for dark spheres and hand-carved birch or maple wood for pale spheres.
• COLOURED HAND-BLOWN GLASS. Durable colored borosilicate glass, hand-blown.
• SYNTHETIC MATERIALS, eco resin of pine oil, raw material finish or covered finishing with fabric, as wool felt.
For the ring that joins the two middles of the spheres: magnetized plain or colored steel, 0.5 cms. thickness and 5 cms. for external diameter and 2.5 cms. for internal diameter.
For the chain:
• SILVER, 51cms + 10 cms. long. Type: fine gauge snake silver chain, 1mm. or thin rolo chain.
• FABRIC, 0.4-1 mm width silk thread cord or 1.2 cm natural colored silk lace
• LEATHER thread, 1-2mm. width.
Hook: bent silver thread 0.5 cms thickness.
