When I heard “Fly me to the moon” played with a traditional Korean instrument on You Tube not long ago, I could feel life and at the same time different pleasure from western instruments. The instrument Saenghwang in particular in a unique shape stimulated my curiosity with its tone, which inspired me to represent the feeling in lighting.

Saenghwang was named as the bamboo pipes make people feel the vitality of life sprung in spring sunshine. It was recognized as the instrument of mystery which symbolized phoenix in the Shilla era, and reflected the mentality of the people who wished for the heavens and humans forming a whole and the unity and peace of the country.
Thus, I would like to express the purity and vitality of sounds of Saenghwang with lighting to feel them in a space.

The form and the function were inspired from the conventional instruments as much as possible. Saenghwang consists of a mouthpiece, a body, and bamboo pipes.

1) The bamboo pipes of Saenghwang are made up of total 17 pieces. The pitch of sounds is determined by the degree of the distance of the hole in the bamboo pipe from the body of the instrument. Substituting this with lighting, the pitch of sounds is represented in intensity(brightness) of light, while finger holes(holes made in the bamboo pipes for fingers to make sounds) are replaced with the on/off button to show the on-off of each bamboo pipe to induce the lighting setting for individual preference.

2) The light rolling when the winds and the sound waves are detected at the mouthpiece(the entrance of blowing instruments) is intended to make the most of the characteristics of the instrument in lighting, which expressed the instrumental rhythm dramatically.

Saenghwang in the Joseon Dynasty symbolized a taste for the arts of classical scholars but because the production and the method of musical performance were difficult it became extinct without establishing itself deep in pop culture. Hopefully, the purity and the life felt from Saenghwang will be reilluminated and receive the love of people once again with this opportunity.
