round tim by gianita kadarisman from canada
designer's own words:
two months ago, i was struck by a car while crossing the street during one of my regular grocery runs. luckily, i only suffered a fractured finger. a metal splint is something that i have to use to keep my finger immobilized until full recovery, and hence with my (temporarily) disabled hand, i navigate through life as usual.
i notice that door handles are not really friendly for people with restricted physical capabilities like me, let alone those who are truly handicapped. i struggled to grab on to the door knob and have trouble pushing the door handle down. usually, the hand just slides off the sleek metal surface of the handle without actually opening the door.
an epiphany struck me. what if we put a stop at the end of the handle?
and voila, the tim. it's based on the letter "t" which is very functional as it provides a stop to hands that are on the verge of sliding off, and also has symmetrical properties. the tim comes in two versions, round and squared.
ideally, the material is aluminum (for its lightness and facilities) with a brushed steel finish. gradually placed grooves are inserted to reassert the idea of slip proof-ness.
