designer's own words:
their. room. there.
What is the thing that teenagers want more than anything else? Space!
Space from being perceived as kids, space from the mundane responsibility of adulthood, space to be themselves!!! Room gives them this space.
Room is an easily deployable shelter, resting place, gathering point, or private space. The rip-stop nylon shell is unrolled and the base section expands on either side providing resting points. The shell is then held in shape by tensioned polypropylene bars. The base section supports an electronics band which provides battery powered speakers and lights, and a holder for personal music devices. This electronics band can be removed when back at home and the speakers can be used while it is recharging.
Room creates a gathering space for teenagers, defined by atmosphere rather than physical barriers. This gives the notion of separation from adults and children without actually excluding them. The shell amplifies the light and sound, enhancing this atmosphere.
Room is compatible with changing trends in technology, enabling whichever personal music device is in fashion (be it minidisk, iPod, or whatever is next!) to be played for the group.
The lightweight foam, fabric and minimal plastic structure means that Room can be easily transported. The whole product neatly rolls up and the electronics band reverses to form a handle, so it can be carried to whatever space is available, beach, park or the end of the garden!
