Roll Stool

Roll Stool by Taisei from japan

designer's own words:

Roll Stool is a bright and light stool that looks like an apple. The concept of the stool is transformation of a simple flat material into a 3D shape. I’d like to design a stool using the mesh sheet, which is used as the plastic bag for wrapping fruits and vegetables. In addition, the mesh sheet of polypropylene has vivid coloring and lightweight to make the fruits looks more delicious.

You cannot imagine the process between the initial form and the finished product although you might feel nostalgia. The assembly process to transform the mesh sheet of polypropylene into a stool is very simple, so you just rolls up to the outside. The elasticity and springy resilience, which is the characteristic of the mesh sheet of polypropylene, gives the stool soft and comfortable seat feeling, and the mesh sheet itself makes the design bright and light.

The stool can be customized by adjusting the length and number of rolling up. In addition to stool, the concept can also be applied to other interiors such as tables and lighting.

The stool has no internal structure and no finish, so it is assembled without nails or screws. As this is a very simple manufacturing process, it is possible to provide the stool as a flat sheet, and user can complete the stool just by rolling up at home. Thus, this design would solve social problems such as fabrication, distribution costs and environmental concerns.
