designer's own words:

the interview with laurens van den acker on cardesignnews.com was the starting point for my project. until i read the interview i have only had seen the new line up of renault concept cars and didn't really understand what the brand was trying to achieve. with my new knowledge i became engrossed into the new direction that renault was heading. this became the spear head of my design. i wanted to capture the sensual forms and warm emotions to my design of the 4l. the design captures the 2 box shape of the 4l and the key graphics.

on every axis of the car there is a relationship of the original. from the front the grill is the dominant area likewise to the original. when looking at the original grill there is subtle sculpture work towards the bottom which meets to the bumper. this detail is carried on to my design but with a more simplified appliance. the bonnet also shares similar sculpture work and again i used the same positioning but simplified the detail to a more modern approach. i felt that "less is more" was the best design approach to achieve an advanced look. in a way this avoided the retro treatment. the interior is also designed in fashion to the less is more approach with undertaking the new directions for renault.

the side is well known for its 3 windows. for the c pillar window i incorporated a inclosed form to express the convey movement. with this detail it lead to the slit vents and to the rear. i feel that this incorporates the renault logo. this logo highlight echos the honey comb structure which the vehicle is made out of.

using the honey comb structure there is are more possibilities to combine materials to create desired effects. my concept for the manufacturing is that the car consists of a chassis with a built in powertrain (electric). then the honey comb core is placed, there can be various types of materials which can act as the core and this can be specially chosen by the user. the ability to choose will create an emotional bond with the user. when the comb structure is in place skin material is place to make a sandwich. like wise to the core the materials can be chosen. in my concept drawings i categorised the materials. i believe this can create a more diverse range of vehicle and with the emotional link there can be a more long relationship with the car which eventually would make the car last for ever!

as time passes maintenance is an issue. for the future i believe 3d printing will become more available, even in households. so when a part especially a body part is damaged, the damage part can be recycled and the new part can be produced at home through the 3d printer.

with these methods and materials i believe this concept can become the renault 4 ever!
