Rainstick Lamps by vina domingo from philippines
designer's own words:
A rainstick is a long, hollow tube partially filled with small pebbles or beans that has small pins or thorns arranged helically on its inside surface. When the stick is upended, the pebbles fall to the other end of the tube, making a sound reminiscent of rain falling. It is an object that has sparked curiosity due to the belief that its use could bring about rain. But rain or not, the rainfall sound it makes is beautiful and soothing hence, its popularity as an accent piece in homes. The Rainstick Lamp combines the mystical appeal of this object to something functional at at the same time. It combines traditional (bamboo, rattan, seeds) and modern materials (stainless steel, polypropelene, electronic components, led bulbs). Take a typical rainstick and at each end connect electronics, led bulbs, and a cover. A sensitive switch can be placed on the bottom inside where the seeds will fall. As the pressure builds up from the falling seed when the stick is pivoted or upended, the lamp on the opposite side lights up slowly. As the seeds build up weight or pressure on the switch, the light intensity builds up until it achieves full brightness of the lamp on the top, which means that the rainstick is in a straight vertical position. Pivoting or spinning the rainstick makes the lamp turn on and off. This makes it interactive and can be put in a position depending on desired brightness. As a wall lamp, it can be attached direct on the wall with a pivoting mechanism at the back so that it can spin around like a roulette. At the same time, it can also be used as a standing lamp by attaching it on a base where it can spin 360 degrees clockwise and counterclockwise. The lamp can be detached from the base and brought everywhere. It can be charged for a few hours with a rechargeable battery inside or it can also be connected directly to a power source. Perhaps a small solar panel could also be incorporated at the top of the covers. The Rainstick Lamp takes advantage of both worlds to bring about an interactive object, combining its curious mystical appeal with functionality, appealing to both senses of sight and sound.
