pod&stem by mizanur rahman from uk
designer's own words:
The pod&stem streetlight, is a unique design that would be a feature of Incheon city. The city light would be the world’s first intelligent "drone" light whereby individual lights "pods" would be able to seek out sunlight and recharge their batteries via solar panels, and then return to their poles "stems" to light up their designated area. The power gathered from the sun would be enough to light up an area all night using the high power/low energy use LED lights.
Using a helium filled balloon body made from lightweight plastics and aluminium, the pod would leave the stem as soon as the sun rises near the area. It would then soar up to the atmosphere and recharge its onboard power cells. During the day it will follow the sun wherever it is most shining in the city using its propellers to move, and will actively send information to other pods around the city of where the best sunlight is. At sundown the pods will return to their stems and will begin lighting their areas.
The pod&stem would be a feature of the city at day and night, seeing the pods gracefully move across the skyline could be a feature for daily life however it can also be a tourist attraction. Furthermore as the pods are controllable, the pods can be moved to an area in the city where it may be dark and light up the area if need be, such as parks and events for tourists.
The possibilities are endless with the pod&stem streetlight; it makes a green environment more exciting and attractive to live in. And creates more use from a system which in most cities is seen as static and single use. Incheon city would have the most advanced city lighting in the world...
