peacock pendant by IONDESIGN from germany
designer's own words:
The design of the Peacock pendant involves 89 OLED panels in the dimensions of 55x53mm.
For the pendant lamp we designed, we decided to put the focus on the characteristics of the OLED technology. In order to show off the softness of the light and the thinness of the OLED panels, our aim was to keep the structure as light as possible. No other artificial illuminant allows such a diffuse lighting with so little environmental impact. We translated the lightness of the OLED-technology into a smooth light sculpture which adapts to the needs of the user. The structure is flexible and changes according to the desired ambiance. By pulling the central element down, the thin bars with the OLED panels at their end rise like the feathers of a peacock. At the same time the illumination changes from a focused light which points down to a more diffuse light with a completely different effect.
Our design underlines the strength of OLED technology since it is immediately visible that the light source of the pendant is different from the ones we are used to. The softly glowing light panels which seem to float in the air evoke a sense of serenity. Thanks to the number of panels used, the lamp produces enough light to illuminate a dining table when pointing down. By raising the “feathers” of the lamp, the room is being filled with a soft and pleasant glow.
OLED means a new relationship with the way we see, use and treat light. We want the user to interact with the light source. One small hand movement can change the character of a room by changing the light. There are various application areas for the Peacock Pendant. It can serve as lighting for commercial places as well as for the private sector. It has been developed as a lamp for dining tables which could be used in hotels, restaurants, as well as at home.
Thanks to the thin metal bars the lamp looks modern and sophisticated. Since the structure has a neutral color it blends in well and showcases the OLED panels in the best possible way, literally highlighting the ultra thin light elements. Due to the modern appearance and the easy producibility, the peacock lamp contains a great commercial potential. The OLED panels are connected to current by cables within the metal bars of the pendant which accounts for the slender and elegant looks of the lamp.
The surprising feature of the Peacock pendant is the transformation of its appearance. Pointing down it resembles a common lamp for a dining table but completely changes its shape during its transformation. Adding a dimmer increases the possibilities to play with the effect of the light. We want to highlight the strength of the OLED panels and give them the possibility to entirely fulfill their potential.
