Oxygen Door Handle A New Breath by hensey vega laiton from colombia
designer's own words:
“oxygen” was designed based on the concept of life. Based on the importance of this as an essential element to live. The idea was raised from three perspectives:
1. oxygen for earth: "oxygen door handles" stimulate the industry to innovate on the use of eco-friendly materials and factory processes which do not affect the environment. furthermore, this product let you get the most efficient use of the raw materials. probably, you should ask yourself right now, how this can be possible?. it is not as complicated as you imagine, the industrial process consists on getting a volume from hollow surfaces. "oxygen door handles" is where the design principle "less is more" stop being a principle to be a reality.
2. oxygen for you: the design has always worried about giving to the consumer a new and fresher concept, because they are tired of the same things. they bet the design and innovation, that's why "oxygen door handle" brings with itself an innovating proposal design, assumed the use of unconventional shapes in the market of door handles.
3. oxygen for your hands: the idea of air is conceptualized in a lightweight shape. air flowing through your hands every time you open or close a door. the design is based on an air sphere that seemed to move and warp the volumen, generating a rounded tip.
although the most used material by the company is brass, "oxygen door handle" proposes use aluminum as a raw material. there are many reasons to support that proposal. firstly, the aluminum works as a raw material which can be recycled over and over again, without losing any of its properties. furthermore, magnesium alloy improves its strength and machinability (known commercially as a "300 series"). extrusion is the most used manufacturing process of handles production nowadays. "oxygen door handle" is looking forward to innovate in this area too. So its manufacturing process consists basically on centrifugal casting, because the internal room of the product must be hollow. anyway, if the company decided to use brass as a raw material to produce "oxygen door handles", their finishes are exactly the same ones which the company uses (gold plus, chrome, stainless steel, etc). at last but not least, aluminum alloys should be anodized to increase surface hardness and corrosion resistance.
