Origin

“The longest life may fade and perish” wrote Theodore Powys, “but one moment can live and become immortal.”

When our lives end, what is left? The stories of us will carry on for some time, told by our children and grandchildren. But as with all things, those stories will fade, and the memory of who we were will quietly diminish. What is it of us that will always be important to our descendants?

It is of course our genes. The idea is to mark our DNA, [our Origin] to preserve and display it. Our features, the shape of our hands, our hair and eye colour, are genetic markers inherited from our ancestors. They are the parts of us that will move forward through time. Carrying our genes and passing them to the next generation is longest lasting and most visceral contribution we will make in our lifetime. This is something we should celebrate.

As generations pass, understanding of our genes grows. We can see physical traits and markers change and evolve, we can track genetic diseases and prepare for them, we can see where we have come from, and who we have come from.
