once upon a hand... by elnaz sanati from canada
designer's own words:
this clay pot like a lover once in heat/
a lock of hair his senses did defeat.
the handle that has made the bottleneck its own seat/
was once the embrace of a lover that entreat. (Khayyam).
inspired by one of omar khayyam’s quatrains, cited above, this design finds resemblance between a door handle and the hand of a lover. the design has been completed through a process that involves both the practical function of the fixture as well as its conceptual connotation.
the practical aspect is a variation of a basic door handle and includes the function, dimensions and essential features of commonly marketed mechanical parts of a real and regular door handle. the shape is so that it can be used as both left and right door handle.
in order to convey the conceptual connotation, the form is processed through a series of studies done on the hands (of a lover) embracing the beloved as well as the hands that grip the door handle and are supposed to remind a bond between present and the past. the outer surface of the handle is of stainless steel completed by a touch of jade which is hidden by the surface and noticed only while being touched. the difference of the heat conductivity of jade and steel allows the holder to feel the two levels and the connotation of the design.
