O by joao araujo sousa from portugal
designer's own words:
“O’s” concept is based on the simple, yet powerful shape of the circle. A crown of lights merges the fundamental symbols of Christmas – light, trees and stars – to create both a visual and spatial experience. 365+1 light emitters set on individual poles - as much as the number of days in a full astronomical year – define this circle. Yet, “O” is not fully closed. The imperfect circle creates an inner void and allows visitors to flow within. This void – a clearing in the forest - becomes an immersive space in which visitors can relax, take a moment of pause and contemplation.
The basic element of the space – both conceptual and structural – is the grid of red poles. The grid is dynamic and vibrant, challenging the visitors´ perception of the space. Variations of light and slight oscillations with airflows will accentuate the kinetic behavior and bring the “forest” to life. At the base, a seamless polished steel plate reflects the whole set and strengthens the visual effect of the forest. When viewed from the outside, this will create a layering perception, animating the public space around it.
Light does not project directly into the visitors´ eyes. It is vertically projected to round translucent diffusers set on top of the light poles. The diffusers are made out of traditional Japanese paper. The intensity and flow of light can be changed, allowing different perceptions of the object and space.
